PUNICACEAE

(Pomegranate family)

Two species in one genus are found from south-eastern Europe to the Himalayas and on the island of Socotra.

[Summary yet to be added]

Punica granatum L.
Pomegranate

The flowers are astringent and have styptic properties. If dried, pulverised, mixed with iron and taken for a year they cause the hair to turn white (Stuart 1911). In NW Moroccan traditional medicine, a decoction of leaf is used externally to treat eczema (Merzouki et al. 2000).
